23 and me?
« on: Saturday 11 July 15 17:46 BST (UK) »
I was planning on doing the autosomal test and getting a male relative to do the Y chromosome test this summer, I did my research earlier on in the year and was all set to go with 23andme - however I just checked back on their site and they only seem to offer one DNA test (linked with the medical analysis that I have no interest in).  Am I missing something obvious or have they stopped offering the other tests?

Hi,

I'm not sure they ever did offer tests other than autosomal?  However, FTDNA (www.familytreedna.com) do a range of tests and I would recommend them (I have used 23andMe too).  If your surname already has a project running you can get a discount if you book the test through the project (still on the same website) - what you get at the end is exactly the same.  I have been very happy with FTDNA and have used them for both my parents' tests and also my maternal Uncle to build up a picture of our family DNA.

Liz

ISOGG has a series if comparison charts that you will find in links at the top of this link

http://www.isogg.org/wiki/List_of_DNA_testing_companies

Also worth considering 23andme has at least two large legal suits against it outstanding and Ancestry stopped doing some of its tests when law enforcement wanted access to the results - explained in the links at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=720950.0
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I think I've had an epic brunette moment - I just looked at FTDNA Liz and I'm pretty sure that was the website I was actually thinking of...  Goodness knows how I'd decided it was 23andme in my head - clearly all their marketing at the moment is paying off hey!!  Thank you both :)

I used 23&Me last year. I was happy with them.

This year I uploaded the 23&Me results to both GEDMatch & FTDNA.

I have also had Y DNA testing at FTDNA & YSEQ.

I have received more contacts from 23&Me, but that might be because I have been a member longer.

I think either one would be fine for autosomal testing.
