British Military service and Marriage in Canada c.1807
« on: Sunday 12 July 15 09:41 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I believe that my 4x Gt Grandfather Joseph Howell (born abt 1785) served in Canada from about 1807. I have his discharge record after his return to the UK.

I've never been able to find his marriage to Rosina/Rosanna (maiden name unknown) who was enumerated on the 1851 England census as being from Coughton, Essex; however there is only a Loughton in Essex, but there is a Coughton in Warwickshire. Joseph was from Birmingham, Warwickshire.

I have not found a marriage for them in England so perhaps they met and married in Canada?

Their daughter, Jane Howell was born 29.6.1813 apparently at Montreal, Canada, that event information was on her baptism record. Jane was baptised 3.9.1822 Birmingham, Warwickshire. The other siblings, including my ancestor, were born in Birmingham.

I would greatly appreciate any details of Joseph's marriage, please, so that I can continue my genealogy on his wife's family. Joseph's military service details while in Canada would be a wonderful bonus but I understand that may require too much searching.

TIA. :)

We know from the military record that he was in Captain O'Hara Baynes' Royal Artillery detachment until 1815 and that information may help to track his military service via the muster rolls at the national archives.

NB for the record, Rosanna was enumerated as born in Coughin not Coughton

Shaun,

Thanks so much for your reply. The two page docs W.O. 97/1237 H2539 include his statement of Service from 1804 for 10 years 222 days, statistic, injury, pension amount and even date of death, but nothing about his service in Canada and nothing about his wife. There is also another number 6913 written above the printed word MAJESTY'S.

Is there much to be gained from the muster rolls/pay lists?

I have searched for Rosanna/Rosina both online several times and in person at the SoG in London to no avail. I'm assuming that she may have been a daughter of one of the officers or one of the women who were sent to help with the washing (so I was told!)

NB for the record, place name Coughin must be an enumeration error. I've been over this before.

I know you've been over it before but it is incorrect to say that she was enumerated on the 1851 England census as being from Coughton, Essex.

Thanks Regorian,

I have referred to that document above, I have a copy from the original. Seems I need to have a chat with one of my Brummy cousins who is on the Forum and who appears not to have a copy of the original military doc and the original baptism of Jane, born in Montreal. Happy to send them a copy.

Cheers,
Candy

I was surprised to find anything on O'Hara Baynes. If I was looking for Captain Mercer RHA then no surprise. I'd better go back and see if there's anything else.

Added: Doesn't appear to be anything else.

There was a Rosetta or Rosehanna Chittham born in Colchester Essex in November 1791 and baptised at St Leonard's in April 1792. The age would be right for your Rosanna.  I can't find any further record for this one.

Thanks, there's also a Rosanna Ram and a Rosanna Cowell on the same website.

Having done several transcriptions of the 1861 & 1871 census some years ago I don't remember all the variations of handwritten letters compared to ours nowadays. However, I'm starting to wonder if the word is actually Anglia with a poorly written l that looks more like h and that enumerator definitely wrote the capital A as enlarged version our lower case a. Definitely not Coughin!
