Help and/or advice please - Edward STEVENSON
« on: Monday 13 July 15 18:52 BST (UK) »
I am totally stumped for how I can find anything out about my Grandfather. I have his name on my mum's b/c and also his occupation.( It is obvious to me that he and my Gran were never married as I can find no record of a marriage and she married later in life and uses her maiden name and refers to herself as a spinster.) They had 4 children over an 8 year period and lived in the same house during these years.(1913-1921) There were no electoral registers taken between 1914 and 1920. I have trawled his name and can find a few with the same name but with no details of when and where born it's like platting fog. Can anyone come up with somewhere that I can look to try to find out any more details, please?

Hello,

I am sure you have tried this but what about 1911 census search for his name with his occupation and hopefully the right area?
WW 1 records?
Are there any deaths within a few years of the last child's birth?

Hi Heywood,

Yes I have tried 1911 census but I can find my gran living and working as a servant at an hotel in Sheffield. My grandfather was a mechanical engineer and I did wonder if he might have come to Sheffield for his work and stayed at the hotel until he found somewhere more permanent to live. As I don't know his age or where he was born I can't find him on this census.
Thanks for trying to help.

Oh and same applies to WW1 records and also looking through the deaths. He could be any one of quite a few options.

Try searching for his death.  If you know his full name?       Did he have a middle name?

Try the  local County or City archives  for Sheffield, ask the staff for advice.

Try old telephone directories  or business directory.

Have you bought a copy of the birth certificate?   there may be clues on the certificate itself.

It's impossible to get any clues looking through deaths as I have no idea where he was born or when he was born and no idea where or when he died. It certainly doesn't seem as though he died in the area where the children were born. There wouldn't be any point in looking at telephone directories. Very very few ordinary people owned a telephone at that time and my grandparents certainly wouldn't have been able to afford one.
I have got the birth certificates of my mother and her siblings and as I said it only shows his name and his occupation. Oh and the address where the family lived. No, no middle name either. The local archives need a specific search directive. This is the reason I'm asking for help and advice, to try to narrow down the area of search.
Thank you for your reply and I really do appreciate you trying to help me.

Do you want to say what their names were, or would prefer to keep them private?

Have you tried looking at the children's marriages, but if you have the address go back and look in the electoral roll there was one for 1915 and they started again in 1918 and the ones for 1918 and 1919 also had absent voters.
