Do you want to say what their names were, or would prefer to keep them private?

It is possibly Edward Stevenson - earlier post

I have been in touch with Sheffield archives who tell me there were no electoral rolls for the period 1918 which is when I understood there to have been an election. They tell me there is an electoral roll for 1920 and I have asked them to look at that for me. I'm awaiting the results from that.
My grandfather's name was Edward Stevenson as Rosie99 says. He was a mechanical engineer and the family lived at 11, Beeley Street.
I think that your idea John of getting marriage certificates for the children might possibly provide some clue. Thanks for thinking of that. It strange but you would think that an obvious thing to check but I didn't think of it. I suppose my area of interest centred around 1913 to 1921 and I didn't think beyond that. I'll let you know how I get on.

Just got out my parents marriage certificate and other than showing that Edward Stevenson was deceased by 1940 there's nothing new there. Will try the others.

Do you believe that Edward was married to someone else, which was why he and Edith never married?

Have you contacted any of your cousins to see if they had any knowledge of their grandfather?

I think he must have been. I know my gran wasn't so it must have been him. There is no-one left who might know anything. I have been trying to find other people who have been doing their family trees and have included Stevenson in the hope that they might come at the problem from a different angle but so far no-one has replied.  ???

There should be 3 electoral rolls, 1 in 1918 and 2 in 1919 (spring & autumn).

Hi John,
Not according to Sheffield Archives. I filled in the form asking for for a search of 1918 and their reply was that there wasn't one for 1918 and the nearest to that date being 1920. I emailed back asking for 1920 to be done instead then but so far have had no reply.
As I live so far away I have to rely on their help to do my searches of archive files. It isn't cheap either which is why I'm trying to narrow my area of search.

Newspaper online archives are always worth a shot. Maybe he is mentioned?

If he had the children between 1913-20, it's reasonable to deduce that he didn't serve in WW1 so perhaps he was an " older" man. A slight clue perhaps?
