Mitchell family in Plumstead, Kent - 1861
« on: Monday 13 July 15 21:21 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with the elusive Mitchell family in Plumstead in the 1861?

I am doing some sideways searching to see if I can get more details on my greatx4 grandmother, Sarah Mitchell.

In the 1851 census Sarah's son Philip Miller my greatx3 uncle is with his wife in Woolwich, and also in the house is a Sarah Mitchell jnr, described as 'cousin'.  Another female relative Eliza Miller (my greatx2 grandmother) is also there, described quite correctly as 'neice' as she was the daughter of Philip's brother James.

So I am inclined to think that Sarah Mitchell jnr might truly be Philip Miller's cousin, i.e. his mother's brother's child.  If I could find his mother's brother, then I might be able to find their parents.

Sarah jnr is described as being born in Woolwich in c 1840, and I can find a child in the 1841 with parents Francis Mitchell (a butcher) and wife Elizabeth in Plumstead.

Following them through it turns out that Francis is actually Samuel Francis Mitchell, born c 1816 and his wife is Elizabeth Banks Hopgood Mitchell (1816, Eltham, Kent) - they give their children unusual middle names and have them all baptised.  Sarah jnr is actually Sarah Etherington Mitchell, which helps a lot following her through the censuses.

However, although I can see that Samuel Francis Mitchell dies in 1895 in Woolwich - he seems to stay around Plumstead and Woolwich all his life -  he is born out of county in the 1841 and I cannot see him in any other census to check his birthplace and try and find his parents, and possibly my greatx5 grandparents.

Elizabeth Banks Mitchell, and children (except Sarah as above), are in the 1851 but without Samuel Francis. Where is he?

I cannot see in the 1861 the family, who should have Samuel Francis and Elizabeth and children Elizabeth Agnes (b 1839), William Joseph (b 1844), Francis Scott (b 1846),  Harriet Louisa (b 1848), and Maria Margaret (b 1851) with them - Sarah Etherington was already married by then.  All the children were born in Woolwich/Plumstead.

Can anyone help me find them in the 1861, or alternatively Samuel Francis in any census after the 1841 ahead of his death in 1895?

Thank you!

Thank you, Groom.  You are right.

If I can't find a birthplace (or a more observant Rootschatter is no more successful), then I will have to resort to that.

I thought I'd try and exhaust census info first.....

Where are they???

There is a section of 1861 census for Greenwich area missing....Woolwich Arsenal (6 books), Woolwich ward.

I have family in that area at that time.........I can sympathise.  ::)

Argh!  Well perhaps indeed that's why all the beautifully helpfully named children don't actually help.

But Samuel Francis doesn't die till 1895 in Woolwich so he should be around on the 1871, 1881 and 1891.  I am currently following through all his children to see if they live next door to him and he's mistranscribed.

I presume this is the family in 1851? Samuel must have been around as there is a young baby. Could he have been in the navy as they lived in Woolwich?

Yes, that's them.  Samuel Francis is a butcher - he's a butcher in the 1841 and then is shown with this occupation on all the baptism records, and the marriage records.

So unless he was a butcher in the navy - yes, I know that's possible - he should have been around in Plumstead/Woolwich.

The death gives born 1820 for death in 1895 Woolwich . There is a Samuel Mitchell born 1820 who was in the coast Guard married to a Mary A around born Woolwich.

Perhaps I was assuming too much with the Woolwich death.....

Samuel Francis is shown on his youngest daughter's marriage in 1873, not noted as deceased.
Know that's not positive evidence that he was still alive then....
