Re think on reformatory
« on: Tuesday 14 July 15 07:52 BST (UK) »
Hi I recently posted on here looking for the name and or whereabouts of an Isle of Man Reformatory. After doing some reading about reformarories. I have come to the conclusion that there wasn't one on the island. Would it be possible for a young boy to be sent to one maybe in Liverpool, as that is where he turns up 5 years later in 1901. His mother is also in Liverpool in 1901
Thankyo

dont cut yourself short for a second.......   there were "boys" schools on the Isle of Wight..... and when researching IOW remember to check records for ALL place names found on the Isle.....  because often the family may use one or two churches or their records found under different names as time changed like boundaries of suburbs do today.......   note also there was a rectory on the Isle where sometimes folk were forced into the clerical orders[ Newport] , which I might add is also the place of a school..... going back many centuries

Isle of Man Times - Saturday 23 December 1893
"There is no reformatory here that the Court can send such cases to, and cases like yours must be sent to the other side of the water: but the Imperial Government refuse to take into the reformatories there any juveniles sent from here unless they are sentenced to penal servitude for the minimum period of five years."

There was an Industrial School where children charged with felony could be sent by order of the justices. It could have been the Strathallan Hall, Industrial Home for Orphan and Destitute Children, Douglas.

Isle of Man Times - Saturday 10 February 1883
The Industrial Home
The Isle of Man Industrial Home for Destitute Children having been examined by the Rev. E. Ferrier, Government Inspector, and all the requirements having been complied with, he has made his report to that effect to his Excellency the Governor. Yesterday his Excellency granted a certificate declaring that the Home is now an Industrial School in accordance with the Industrial Schools Act, 1881. After the necessary arrangements have been made with the Committee of Management, the Home will be a place where children charged with felony can be sent by order of the justices.

You're getting your islands mixed up! Diavalos asked about the Isle of Man.
