Axbridge Upton?
« on: Tuesday 14 July 15 09:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know where Axbridge Upton is?
Supposedly in Gloucestershire - it is a reference from a census.
Is it perhaps a part of Upton?

Any suggestions welcomed.

Thanks

Did you see this on the original image?
Or are you looking at a transcript?

Can you give us the reference, s that we can take a look?
A Census reference consists of Class, Piece, Folio and Page.

Wild guess here but could it be Hawkesbury Upton? That's defnitely in Gloucestershire.

Census reference is in the 1871 Wales census
Pc 5334, Folio 63, Page 1.

In another census the birthplace is given as just 'Upton.'

I assume this is Upton, Gloucestershire, but have always been confused by the reference to Axbridge Upton.

Googling 'Axbridge Upton' does bring up other census references, but I can find no place by such a name - Axbridge of course being in Somerset.

Thanks

What about Upton St Leonards? It would be easier to get to South Wales from there than Hawkesbury Upton, Upton Cheney or Tetbury Upton. No Severn bridge then!

Have you any more information about Henry Harvey. e.g father's name from marriage cert? That might locate him on 1841 census, which would be before he married judging by his age. He might still be living in his place of birth then.

Thanks.

I've assumed it was Upton St Leonards, but why was it written down as Axbridge?

Henry HARVEY's father, according to his own marriage certificate, was Miles HARVEY.

I've not been able to find Miles HARVEY in any census.

I've only been able to find Henry HARVEY in 1851, 71 and 81 census records.
In 1851 his birthplace is given as 'Upton', in 1871 it is 'Axbridge Upton' and in 1881 just 'Gloucestershire'.

Thanks again for suggestions.

Just found a Hazell family who also have several members born in Axbridge Upton. Although I haven't managed to find baptisms for the two children born there or a marriage for the parents who were also both born there, there is an on line tree which has the place as Hawkesbury  Upton. I suppose if you say Hawkesbury, dropping the "H" and with a local accent it could sound like  Acksbree, which could morph into Axbridge. In 1871, the Hazell's POB has become H??bury Upton, so closer to Hawkesbury.

So now I'm thinking Lisajb was right. Longer journey to Monmouthshire

Miles and Dinah Harvey are baptising children in Hawkesbury around the right time, to be Henry's siblings. Records on Ancestry listed as Hawkesbury without Upton. Looks like we're on the right track now.

There have been ferries running at Old Passage, Aust from at least 1825?

And a railway ferry link at New Passage from 1863?
