Looking for Grace Hannah MCMURDO b abt 1875 Stranraer, Wigtownshire

Hi Jan. If you search MCMURDO in here, there are a good number of posts for McMurdo, including Dumfries, you may pick something up in there?

I have a Janet McMurdo from New Cumnock, Ayrshire, married into my Mason Family, also of New Cumnock! I'll check what I have as to her ancestry, don't think I have much, but I'll get back to you on it!

I think you should be looking at Liverpool for this McMurdo family not Wigtownshire. A Grace McMurdo married a Patrick Murphy in 1896 and they can be found on the 1901 census in Liverpool. Patrick was a Sailor and died by drowning in Adelaide Harbour, Australia age 36 in 1910. Grace is a widow in 1911 and died in Liverpool in 1955 age 78.

My feeling is that she was born in Stranraer, possibly soon after he parents came from Ireland. She married and lived the rest of her life in Liverpool (she was my son in laws great grandmother) I was in Stranraer yesterday, and mentioned that I was, and he said that was where she was born. I can't find a birth for her anywhere, but I have her living in 1891 living at 18 Middle Street, with her widowed mother and siblings. I can't find her anywhere in 1881. On 4 Sept 1896 she married Patrick Murphy, ad she died in Kirkdale, Lancashire 18 Mar 1955. Grace's parents were Patrick and Susan McMurdo (don't know Susan's maiden name) and I'm told they were born in Liverpool 1836 but no proof.

Seen the census 1891 where she says she was born Liverpool same as mother and sister Susan
Do you have a copy of her marriage certificate with the fathers name ?

There is a Grace Hannah McMurdie born Preston 1880 father John mother Ellen

There is a Susan McMurdo  B 1851 Ireland widowed age 30 housekeeper address13,Cemares Street Liverpool also daughter Susan  b 1866 Liverpool no Grace but an Annie b 1872 Liverpool
We can rule out Grace Hannah McMurdie

I think the age for Susan is wrong in 1881! I found the following at 15, Walmsely St, Liverpool in 1871.
Henry Murdo 28, Seaman b.Scotland
Susan 34, Wife b. Liverpool
Susan 5, Dau. b. Liverpool
Henry 2, Son b Liverpool

I think this should be McMurdo as a Henry McMurdo died in 1876 age 30? as well as a Henry McMurdo age 3 in 1872.

The only problem is not finding the birth of Grace or her whereabouts in 1881!
