Eastern European at 23andme
« on: Tuesday 14 July 15 16:37 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Recently my Dad tested with 23andme because I wanted to know his Y and mtDNA groups but his Ancestry Composition results have really surprised me!
He gets:
56.9%
British & Irish
11.7%
French & German
0.6%
Scandinavian
27.3%
Broadly Northern European
1.1%
Eastern European

Southern European
0.1%
Sardinian
0.1%
Broadly Southern European
0.1%
Ashkenazi

1.8%
Broadly European
0.3%
Middle Eastern & North African
0.2%
North African
0.1%

Broadly Middle Eastern & North African
0.1%
East Asian & Native American

I've researched DNA testing for 5 years now as I have been trying to find out clues about my Mum's unknown American ancestry so I know that the East Asian is noise and the Middle Eastern and Ashkenazi could also be noise but that 1.1% Eastern European has got me stumped, especially considering people with known Eastern European ancestry get such conservative results!

Are there any people with British ancestry here who have tested at 23andme who get a similar score? If so, do you have known ancestry or is yours a mystery? I can't figure out where Dad's has come from but other tests seem to support it! I admit he has loads of brick walls but how many Eastern Europeans made it to the East Midlands within the last 300 years?
East Asian
0.1%
Yakut
Swift , Matthews, Price , Clarke , Rockley, Dewey, Turton, Wild, Nottingham
Aldread, Brentnall, Cowlishaw Derbyshire
Elliot, The Borders/Nottingham FWK industry
Hartopp, NW Leicester (Barkby and surrounds).
Smith Bilston Staffordshire
Bennett, Calary? Ireland
Johnson, Staffordshire/Warwickshire
Latham, Lewis, Trevor, Vero, Armstrong, Barnett

I'm wondering why the results seem to add up to 100.4 % rather than 100 %  :o  :-\  ::)

This article is about the wrong Newcastle - Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east, not Newcastle-under-Lyme in East Midlands.  But Newcastle-under-Lyme was on the canal system and on the main road from London to the North-West, so there was plenty of opportunity for eastern Europeans to pass through.

I know it was about Newcastle upon Tyne, I posted it has an example of the diversity of immigration during the 300 years mentioned.

No where in the original post is Newcastle under Lyme mentioned.?

Another example, slightly farther South ;

Points noted, youngtug.

The main issue is where could 1% east European ancestry have crept in (equivalent to about one 5xgreat grandparent who was born say 1700-1750), and the answer is almost anywhere!
