... I have entablished that my grandfather was Jeremiah (Jerry) Byrne born in 1873 in Abbeylieux, Laois.  His father was also Jeremiah Byrne.  Grandad died of TB in Edenderry in 1908 ...

I'm sure some folk have already found the records on Familysearch as I have, but can you expand on your basis, ie. how do you know, is it purely the military record or is there any other background to this?

Hi

I am doing a lot of research in Ireland, as both sides of my family came from there originally.  I just thought Id ask if anyone has any preference for the choice of companies best suited for Ireland, Ancestry, Rootsireland etc.  I have a subscription with Ancestry at the moment but it does not cover Ireland unless you take out the worldwide subscription.  I am prepared to do that but thought I would get opinions from yourselves first about alternatives.

Has anyone any thoughts  ?

Diane

I've got a premium membership with Ancestry, which does include Irish records.
Mullingar, Westmeath Ireland: Gilligan/Wall/Meagher/Maher/Gray/O'Hara/Corroon (various spellings)
Bristol: Woodman/James/Derrick
Bristol/Somerset: Saunders/Wilmot
Gloucestershire:Woodman/Mathews/Tandy/Stinchcombe/Marten/Thompson
Wiltshire: Mathews
Carmarthen: Thomas, Lewis
Australia: Mary Lewis, transportee, married Henry Brown - what happened to her?

The Jeremiah Byrne who died at Edenderry in 1908 enlisted in 1893 aged 18 years so born c1875.

Why do you think that Jeremiah Byrne & Mary Curran were his parents?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Through 1901 census and marriage records of Jeremiah Byrne and my fathers birth certificate I know that he was my grandfather.  And through some distant  step cousins . But they knew very little about him.  I also.know, that he died young as his wife (my grandmother)'went on to marry again and we visited them in Ireland when I was young.  So I knew the history but not very much knowledge about my grandfather.

Going off the military records  I established where Jeremiah was born and the only family I came up with was Jeremiah Byrne and Mary Curran.  The military record has a stamp on it saying where and when my grandfather died which confirmed to me that it was the correct record.

Hope u can make sense of this !

Hi Diane,

I just have a niggle here.

You say that you have documentation to say that your Grandfather Jeremiah was born in Abbeyleix !

I take it that you also have documentation to prove that his father, ie your Great Grandfather was also called Jeremiah !

Does this documentation also give an occupation for your Great Grandfather ?

So, the 1875 birth that you have 'found' says Kilkenny.

While Kilkenny and Laois border each other in parts, Abbeyleix is not near the border.

Tara

http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/kilkenny/abbeyleix.htm

There are a few mentions of an Abbeyleix in Kilkenny ( news to me)  ;D

This being one.

Can you clarify EXACTLY where you've gotten Abbeyleix from and EXACTLY what it says.

Tara

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.
