William GANDY
Elizabeth BLOWMASTERS

Daisy

I tell you what Daisy, you might have potentially stumbled on to something here. We know there were many Masters blacksmiths from the New Forest... We were at the Hampshire Record Office today and having seen all these different Masters, we stumbled across, right at the end of our session, something from the Brockenhurst parish records, which read:

1763: Nicholas Masters, blacksmith: Born in Brockenhurst; at 15 hired himself for a year to farmer George Etheridge and served him 2 to 3 years; has a wife Christian and children Elizabeth Blow ( 8 ), John (7) and Nicholas (4)

Elizabeth Blow Masters?

And we also found in baptisms:
1.8.1779 William baseborn son of Betty Blowmaster

Now, if Betty Blowmaster is in fact Elizabeth Blow Masters, and she had a son in Brockenhurst in 1779 aged 20, than that fits in with our William Masters, the blacksmith, who we know was born in Hampshire around 1777-1779? It, if true, also provides us with the missing link between Brockenhurst and Southampton, where William married in 1802 and lived for the rest of his life.

Oops just seen the William baseborn son of Betty Blowmaster referenced earlier in this thread too, I guess I did not make the connection before, but now I have seen Elizabeth Blow, daughter of Nicholas Masters, it makes it interesting! Once again thanks to all who replied on this thread.

That does look it all connects together.
Might be worth looking to see if there's any record of maintenance for the illegitimate child.

How/where would I find that?
Thanks,

Do a search on Hampshire Records Office website. I have found Bastardy Bonds for the New Forest there.

Brockenhurst baptisms (on Knightsroots) has an Elizabeth Blow baptised on 15 dec 1754, daughter of Richard Masters. I have found your 1763 reference on Hampshire record office site, for settlement examination of Nicholas and lists Elizabeth Blow as daughter, so maybe error on Knightsroots.
Ancestry has a couple of trees with Nicholas's family, both give his wife as Christian Collis and list the three children mentioned on the settlement order and more children born after 1763.
It also looks like Christian was his second wife and his first wife was Mary. If this refers to the same Nicholas

family search has two baptisms of children of William and Elizabeth Bloo (sic) Gandy at St Mary Southampton. Harriot on 10 April 1875 and Charles on 29 Mar 1787.

So as well as marrying in Southampton they stay there for at least five years.
