Helen Ballantyne Turnbull

My Great Grandmother H B Turnbull was born 17 March 1857, 6 Kirkgate,Hawick.   There is no father recorded on her BC.    Is there any way to find out if she was acknowledged by her father?   Her mother Margaret Turnbull married a John Robson in 1858 and in all the subsequent census Helen is shown as a "Robson".     I am also intrigued by her middle name as there would be seem to be no connection to any Ballantynes on her side of the family tree.......

Given that the fathers name is missing from her birth record it is unlikely that he acknoledged the birth of his daughter or gave consent for his name to be used.  It may be worth checking local court records to see if the mother tried to get any support from the father. (Also if the mother claimed from the authorities under the Poor Law they may have tried to reclaim money themselves from the father through the Courts).

Re middle name , it is possible that this is the father's surname - I have come across this a few times
