Recently my husband was looking for any info about his first cousin who was a Canadian War bride leaving Liverpool in the 1946 with an. 18 month old son.Finding her marriage and hence her married name he found her on the passenger lists which also gave him an address in Ontario. He then Googled the Surname in Ontario and found quite a few possibles .After  three days he was in contact with this  18 month old and they have exchanged photographs and information.
I would try the passenger lists first .

If it's not a very common name, I would recommend trying www.switchboard.com or www.whitepages.com.  The US Public Records indexes on www.familysearch.org are another option and sometimes list a date of birth.

Who do you have an address for?

Do you know what state he lived/lives in?

For a young person, I would also recommend searching Facebook.

As you say you have an address, then I suggest that your friend writes a letter, as an introduction.  A telephone call might be seen as too intrusive, and abrupt.  Or Facebook, as already suggested.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
