Hmmm.... well here's my 10 cents

These are the marriages for a William George BROWN between 1895 and 1929:

1900/4259   Elizabeth Alice   Burnett
1911/8694   Janet Matilda   Shearer
1917/2161   May   Just
1920/2603   Dulcie Bell   Murphy
1928/3875   May Parker Godso   Hill

1929/1613   Joyce Yolande    Gillbanks
1929/9967   Lilian Sarah   Leggett

Wouldn't a nosey at $A show the female living at the same address in electoral records to identify the 'wife' in the newspaper article?

Several trees on Ancestry for Joyce Yolande Gillbanks!   Gotta go out now, so will check in again tonight!

Modified to add - Also at least one one for WIlliam George Brown and Lillian Sarah Leggett!

And now I really gotta go - dentist - ugh!

Not the one highlighted above.     She was living with her "William George BROWN" in Auckland in 1938 (and in later years).

There appear to be at least 12- 20 eligible males by those names born in NZ.

The Probate file for William George BROWN - of Hatuma - died 25 March 1929, is available for viewing at FamilySearch website.

- Janet Matilda BROWN (of Auckland) was his lawful widow and her affidavit states they had no children together.

- Further, there is the affidavit of Gladys Maud GORDON, married woman of Hatuma, who states she acted as housekeeper to William George BROWN for nine years prior to his death.

Mmm ... can see a marriage for Gladys (with surnames BROWN and CLIFFORD both indexed).
Sorry can't publish details on here (our BDM laws don't permit that).  ::)

Will have a scoot around electoral rolls to see what I can find.

That then is the same 'Janet' as mentioned in the article

Would the ER then also perhaps show Gladys' children with her when they were of age to vote, and that would give you some names to go on?
