Death record in 1853 Cooma
« on: Friday 17 July 15 10:11 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Is it possible to get a death certificate for Anne Russell who apparently died 10 May 1853 in Cooma even though it does not appear on the NSW Death record index. I found her travel documents which stated that her parents were William and Anne. I'm hoping that the death cert. just might have her mother's maiden name.  Thank you.

Hi there,

Civil registration of births, deaths, marriages commenced 1 March 1856 in New South Wales.  So, it is not possible to obtain a death certificate for 1853.   The Early Church Records that NSW BDM does have that cover 1853 would be a burial record, and there was no requirement for a burial record to note the parentage of the deceased.

Sorry,

Cheers,  JM

Many thanks, majm.

Well, I guessed that it was unlikely but thought I should ask anyway.

A pity.

Do you have any other information about your lass?

Was your elusive lass born in the colonies?

Was RUSSELL her married surname?   What names for her children?

Have you checked for a notice in the digitised online newspapers?

Have you looked for a burial record in the local cemetery's records?

Don't make a brickwall where none may exist....

Cheers,  JM

I did but couldn't see one. Might be my looking rather than no record.

I agree , don't put the mortar in your brickwall without finding other options.

The online digital newspaper would be Trove. Great resource.  :)

Another obvious thing to look for, would be if she had any siblings here in NSW. You could follow them to look for information on parents.

I see there's a submitted tree online at Ancestry.   The tree owner lists Anne as Anne RUSSELL, and her first husband as Christopher RUSSELL.  I see they have her parents as William BLACKBURN and Mary Ann BLACKBURN.   The tree owner displays her date of death as 10 May 1853, and at Cooma.  They have her arriving in the colonies in 1839 and then (while not recording how she gets there) they have her second marriage in Chorley, Lancashire, England in 1851, and her husband was John BERRY.  They have not shown how Anne returns to NSW.   (there may also be a further marriage noted by the tree owner, but I am not sure if the tree owner has substantiated any of the info for this lass, if so, the husband MAY have been a John McCARTHY)

So, have you searched for Anne BERRY, or Anne McCARTHY just in case  :)

If I may be a tad cynical, may I also note that Ancestry's drop down menu, at present,  has Cooma in Victoria but not in NSW .....

JM,
Her family has been well researched and various family trees are on line including on Monaro Pioneers. I believe Anne was probably the sister of my ancestor in Tipperary and I was hoping for confirmation of their mother's name.  Even though I have my ancestor's 1869 Irish death record, it has very little detail unfortunately.

Sorry, noticed that you posted again.  Highly unlikely that Anne remarried in Lancashire!

Christopher and Anne arrived in Australia together with 7 children in 1839 on board the Aliquis under the Bounty Immigration Scheme.

Thx again

I think this is likely to be associated with that submitted tree :

NSW BDM online index has Anne CARTY, Vol 140, line 1321, and drilling down I suspect she died or was buried 10 May 1853
