Hello, I am helping my husband's cousin with his family tree and have found links to this/ these families through his 2 x grandmother Mary Grierson Gainon.
I am interested in the origin of the name Gainon. Is it French?

What birthplace is shown on census entries

Mary Grierson Gainon was born in about 1827 in Scotland. One census has her birthplace down as Annan, Scotland . Her parents were Joseph Grierson Gainon and Janet Grierson. I have the dates 1798 - 1855 for Joseph at the moment.
This is really as far as I have got with that line as I have only been doing it for a few days. The little wider research that I have done all points to the family origins being in Dumfriesshire.

Mary married William Gledhill of Yorkshire and they lived in Manchester. I believe her parents lived there too. My husband is on my PC so cannot double check that right now.

A Joseph Grierson Gainon married Hannah Nesbet on 28.4. 1857 at Manchester Catheedral

He was aged 20 occ picture frame maker father Joseph occ solicitor
Hannah was 19 father John occ labourer

On Mary's 1851 marriage cert to William Gledhill - she gives her fathers occupation as "traveller"

Thank you for those. I have them already but it's good to have confirmation. They certainly moved around a lot. Ah just seen the post re Mary and her fathers occupation. Thanks, I'll look into that more.

Joseph Gainon Grierson and Janet Grierson were first cousins....both descending from Samuel Grierson and Janet Wightman. It is not clear whether Joseph's father James married his mother Mary. Rather than France I think the name Gainon may be a version of Gunion...from South West Scotland. Joseph Gainon Grierson died in 1855 and his wife Janet in 1869. They had at least seven children.
