Thanks for the informtion. I downloaded the 1853 marriage register for William Banks and Christina Steven, but as its pre 1855, there is very little information, and no mention of their parents names.

You say above that William Banks was b 1860 and married Christina - his second wife - in 1896

Where does an 1853 marriage fit in?

William Banks, a widower, age 39 of Louisburgh, Wick married Jessie Carnaby, a widow, age 32 on 2nd October 1896 at 64 Pudley Avenue, North Leith. Parents of William were William Banks, Tailor, (deceased) and Christina Banks m/s Steven (deceased). Parents of Jessie were William Carnaby ( odd since she is a widow), a Farmer, and Catherine Carnaby m/s Henderson (deceased). Witnesses were John Banks and James Carnaby.
According to Familysearch William Banks and Christina Steven had the following children, all born in Wick-
Donald 1856
John 1860
Alexander 1862
Mey 1866

Can be found on census as follows-
1861 - High Street, Wick ( not on Ancestry for some reason but on Findmypast)
William Banks, 38, Tailor, b. Canisbay
Christina Banks 39 ,wife, b. Canisbay
William 6, son, b. Wick ( only evidence of your William with his family)
Donald 4,son  b. Wick
John 1, son b. Wick

1871 - 18 High Street, Wick
William Banks, 48, Tailor, b. Canisbay
Christina Banks 49, wife, b. Canisbay
Donald Banks 14, son, b. Wick
John Banks 11, son, b. Wick
Alexander Banks 8, son, b. Wick
May Banks 4, daughter, b. Wick

1881 - Craigstown, Wick
William Banks 58, Tailor, b. Canisbay
Christina Banks 59, wife, b. Canisbay
Donald Banks, 24, son, Baker, b. Wick
John Banks 20, son, Ploughman, b. Wick
Marjory Banks 14, daughter, scholar, b. Wick

1891 - can't locate them

From Scotlandspeople it would appear that both William Banks  Snr and Christina Banks or Steven died in Wick in 1881. Their death certificates can be downloaded online and will give you names of both sets of parents.

It looks as if William Banks jnr was born just before the start of Statutory registration in 1855 ( his age varies from record to record).

Many thanks for all the info on the Banks'. Just downloaded the death certs for my 3x great grandparents, William and Christina Banks, (nee Steven). Very sad, they both died of typhoid fever a week a part from each other. William's parents were William and Helen Mowart, and Christina's parents were, Donald and Marjory Anderson. The name Marjory rings a bell!

Glad you have made progress. I did wonder about the deaths being the same year and had a look in the newspapers just in case it had been some sort of accident. How sad!

Hello,

My great grandmother is Elizabeth Manson Banks born 1873 in Wick (later Newman was her married name).

Her father was John Banks, I believe. I'm not sure how that fits in? I know they had a shop in the High Street.
