Whirley, Wigan
« on: Saturday 18 July 15 14:01 BST (UK) »
One of my wife's ancestors, John Dickinson , was baptised at All Saints, Wigan on 12 June 1803 and the register says, 8th son of Richard Dickinson of Whirley, weaver.

I've Googled the name Whirley without success.  The nearest that comes up is Wheeley!

Does anyone know where Whirley was/is?  When Richard's first 5 children were baptised, 1787-1895, his abode was listed as Aspull.  His next 4, 1797-1803,  abode Whirley.  And his last 4, 1805-1815, abode Scholes.

Aspull and Scholes are well documented but nothing on Whirley.

Any ideas?
Craven, tarporley cheshire; hulme manchester.
Meredith, manchester.
Scanlon, sligo ireland.
Barwick, grove & reading berks; wolverhampton staffs, manchester.
Simpson, pately bridge appletreewick & halifax yorks; manchester.
Dixon, storriths bolton abbey addingham & embsay yorks; manchester

I had to find that for some of my ancestors too.

(For them it had been spelt "warley").

I used to live in Wigan.   I think the place is Whalley.   You may like to check that,  it is a district of Wigan.

it's Whelley on a modern map - near Haigh Country Park https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.5530174,-2.6171927,15z?hl=en-gb

Is that what you mean?

It took me ages to get used to Wigan pronunciation.

The Bus was called a Buzz.

The greeting was:   "Are you All reet"
