Stan,

Using your first post re the map, I then found the modern map. I was asking ScouseBoy if it was the same place as his Whalley reference and not ignoring your information.

I used to live in Wigan.   I think the place is Whalley.   You may like to check that,  it is a district of Wigan.

There is a Whalley House http://maps.nls.uk/view/102344045#zoom=5&lat=7280&lon=6525&layers=BT which is on the west side of Wigan.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.  You've all been so helpful.

I followed Stan's link re Whelley [my spelling in my posting was an error, double e instead of double l] and it took me to an extract from An Archaeological and Historical Magazine Chiefly Relating to the Lancashire and Cheshire, Volume 1 published 1880 and the extract clearly states: "Whelley, commonly pronounced Whirley..."

I think the Macclesfield one is a bit far from the other Dickinson locations and Whalley House on the wrong side of town.

Agreed - Whirley, Macclesfield certainly not a candidate!

Scholes runs into Whelley and Whelley into Aspull so it seems the family moved about the same area.  At that time most baptisms took place at All Saints which is the parish church of Wigan.

Thanks both of you for those last two comments.  I now feel confident that our Dickinsons lived in Whelley.
