Hi BugBear

Maybe Helen left Adelaide after the death of John, unless the married ended sooner?

John VARLEY aged 73y resident at College Park died in Adelaide 1 Jul 1963.
Matches this birth...

You have found the suburb of Norwood not the Registration District of Norwood

Only Kensington Road is noted as the place of the birth which is in the registration district of Norwood.  The birth could have been in any of the suburbs through which Kensington Rd passes as the complete area would have been in the Norwood registration district in 1890.

The News  11 August 1931
"WORSE OFF THAN IN AUSTRALIA"
Farmers in England Suffer "People in England appear to be worse off than they are here. and this applies particularly to farmers in Norfolk and Suffolk," said Mr. J. Varley, sheep farmer, of Harrogate, near Nairne on disembarking from the steamer Hobsons Bay at Outer Harbor. He had been on a six months' holiday trip to Britain.
"A visitor to Britain is immediately impressed with the harmful effect of the dole system," said Mr. Varley. "The system calls for no labor in return for the money. It is having a serious effect on farmers. Married men are not prepared to work for 30/ a week when £2 10/ may be secured from the dole. The result is that farmers have had to offer more attractive wages. which generally are more than they can afford.
"Everywhere are farms for sale and to let. Many can be secured almost at unimproved valuation. A wet spring has made conditions even worse."

Well, I now have a fairly rich set of facts on that generation of Womacks.

Interestingly, some dates and locations overlap.

I now need to look at the data I've built up "in the round" and see what I can see.

Thanks to all - I couldn't have got to this point without you.

Which dates and locations?

Perhaps you may like to do a search on TROVE for more snippets.

Neither John nor Helen appear on the 1939 or 1943 South Australian Electoral Rolls however not all rolls survived.  John advertised his farm for sale in 1931 so may have retired sometime after his return from England and moved to the suburb of St Peters or he may have kept his farm. He died at College Park which is also a suburb in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide.

Sorry - what I meant was dates and locations of other members of the extended family, back in the UK.

There's also an interesting sequence for John Varley:

Jan 1931: Sell 551 acre farm and 6 bedroom farmhouse at Harrogate
Feb - Aug 1931: visit UK
Aug 1933: buy 400 acres near Mount Barker

So he moved around 30 miles NW. I wonder why?
