Lenc, the only source for BMDs in Scotland is www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. For the period you are looking at, it is perfect as you are well within the dates that you can look up the original images online (at really reasonable costs).

Aghadowey's 1901 census looks very likely to be your family given the references to Hurlford.

Scottish birth certs from the early 1860s include the date and place of parents' marriage. Always useful if you can't find parents' marriage  ::)

Advice is to look for the birth of a child with the most unsual name you can find, in this case it will be Jemima McArdle in Hurlford 1898.

Might be a place to start...

Lenc, sorry  :P Just found, I think, a likely marriage for Francis. Exactly where you would think it would would be. A marriage shows for a Francis McArdle to a Maggie, 1895 in Hurlford.

Scottish marriage certs include full names of mothers' names for bride and groom.

From Scotlands People, you can also search the 1911 census and . from there. Can see possible entry for Francis in Hurlford. Leave the ages open, there are only two showing on the index, maybe father and son?

This Francis is certainly the Francis you are looking for  :) His 1895 marriage in Hurlford, at the St Paul's Chapel there, (RC church) confirms his parents' names that you have.

Here is John (Red) McArdle's will.

I think Monica that piece you posted must be right, Francis's mother was a Loughran before she married. She died in childbirth. Is this from a census?

Aghadowey mentioned earlier possible date of 1925 for father John's will. Is this the right year?

Regardless, I don't think Margaret Drain McArdle died before these possible years on the will of father in law, John. Possible a death year for her on SP in 1963, still in Hurlford. The year is within the range that you can view the cert online (50 years rule for viewing deaths online on SP). Details from this reg may help you now.
