Merchant seaman. Edward Arthur Hughes died 1933(estimated)
« on: Sunday 19 July 15 14:19 BST (UK) »
I believe that my uncle died in hospital circa 1933 in South Africa  CAPETOWN possibly.

The story is that he had appendicitis  and was transferred to a cape town hospital, but unfortunately did not survive.  I have been unable to trace his death certificate.

Hi Scouse,

I believe he was ex- ss COCHRANE - died 10.11.34. If you are still not sure then you probably need to confirm he was aboard so your best bet would be to obtain the ship's official logbook for COCHRANE official number, 146705. The logbook and crew agreement survive at MHA Canada -  https://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/viewcombinedcrews.php?Official_No=146705

Yes. I did obtain a copy of  his record card and it did show him as being deceased.  But I have not been able to find a death certificate.  Could it be because he died after he had been discharged from the ship?   Why isn't he listed on the merchant seamen died overseas list? Do you know?

He is not listed against the Marine Deaths and his card states ex- COCHRANE so it is likely he was discharged from the ship. The logbook may give some details of the circumstances.
I am afraid I don't know why he is not mentioned in the overseas list.

As I remember the story in the family,  Representatives of the shipping line  called on His parents (my grandparents)   and informed them that he had been transferred to a hospital in Capetown.

I do not know how long he had been suffering with the appendicitis  before they could land him on shore.              Thank you for your help and advice. He was only about twenty.

Thanks Jebber, I looked at that which is the DAS Index but it slipped my mind for some reason. I have now found his entry in the Deaths at Sea Register.
He died at the Provincial Hospital Port Elizabeth from Abdominal Adhesion.
Not sure but it also states "Dis? 8th Nov, 1934 at Port Elizabeth". Could he have been discharged hospital on the 8th Nov and died 10th? Age confirmed as 20.

Thank you for searching for me.          What a shame that he was so far from home. And so young.
