Proni will - no image
« on: Monday 20 July 15 03:41 BST (UK) »
Hi, I wondered if anyone knows how to obtain a copy of a will listed in PRONI Will Calendars, but there is no image? This is for a Margaret McCombe, from Grayhilla, Co Armagh, who died on 27 Sep 1918. The summary is there on PRONI, but I would love to see what else is in it.

PRONI are in a long process of digitising wills, so if you don't want to wait (I don't know what their timescales are) you can order it.  I'm afraid it will cost you, I think the last will I ordered was about £15. Because you know exactly what you want, you can use the PRONI search service:

http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/research_and_records_held/can_someone_else_do_research_for_me.htm

You can email them at the contact details in the link below, you need to provide them with the following (the simplest thing is to send them a screenshot of the index entry itself):

- the name of the deceased person
- the date (day, month and year) of probate or the date of grant of letters of administration
- the place of probate or grant of letters of administration

http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/contact_us.htm

They will then email you back to confirm the cost and ask if you want to proceed.

Contacting PRONI will be of no use since there was no Will to probate-
Administration of the Estate of the late Margaret McCombe, Grayhilla, Co. Armagh, Widow, who died 27 September 1918, granted at Armagh 21 September 1921 to Thomas McCombe, Farmer, the son. Effects: £413 12s 6d.

Yes, I'd read the summary. So there wasn't a will? What a shame. They can be so useful.

It's a pity there was no will on this occasion

I was delighted to find two wills when visiting PRONI. I had assumed "no image" meant the wills were lost. It only meant they had not been digitized!

Hi,
I am afraid that Aghadowey is correct. Letters of Administration were issued by the court to allow a responsible person to dispose of the deceased's property when no will had been found.

This will be a very interesting case then. I had already made a PRONI request before hearing back from anyone, and have heard back from them. So far, it looks like it is going through. I'll let you know what eventuates!

There is no Will listed in the Will book so what they probably have on file are the administration paperwork- often only a few forms filled out at the time of application but occasionally letters and other interesting documents
