Request 1901 and1911 Census look-ups of the following:
Address: Probably 5 Raise Street, Saltcoats, Ayrshire
James McCREADIE (b. Abt 1854, Ballantrae) [Occupation may be recorded as "Burgh Worker"]
Agnes (m/s DINNEL[L]) McCREADIE (b. 1859, Whithorn)
Jeanie McCREADIE (b. Abt 1879, Glen Luce) [Married 1903, probably not at 5 Raise Street in 1911 Census]
James ORR (b. 1885, Glasgow) [May be recorded as "Adopted Son"]

Corporal James ORR 2264, 57th Battalion, 5th Division, Australian Imperial Force was killed in action on 25 Apr 1918.  His Will stated “In the event of my death I leave everything I possess to my adopted mother Mrs McCREADIE, 5 Raise Street, Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland".

I wish to determine whether James was formally adopted or if he was "taken in & cared for".

Hi,

Scottish 1911 is only available through SP which is a PAYG site which requires buying credits.

Hi ,

Think it was around 1928 before there was legal adoption in Scotland -

Quote
However, adoption, the permanent removal of a child into another family, had no legal basis in the United Kingdom until the 20th century and was done on an informal basis.
In 1926 the first legislation relating to adoption was passed for England and Wales, and broadly similar legislation rapidly followed for Northern Ireland and Scotland.

More info on adoption records here:

http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/adoption-records

For what it's worth I know that there is another form of something like legal guardianship in Scotland, unfortunately the name of it has slipped my mind for the moment!

I doubt it applies in this case though as it seemed to suggest a responsibility for education and in the cases I'd seen also suggested diminished responsibility on the person being cared for.

Apologies for being so vague on this latter point. Will post again if I can find what I'm thinking of.

Suspect I was thinking of Tutor and Curator as described here:

http://www.dsl.ac.uk/entry/snd/tutor

Suspect in your case it sounds more like a private arrangement though.

National Records of Scotland catalogue includes items for those being assigned as tutor.

MANY thanks folks. As James was KIA before adoption was formally legalised, I should not take literally his use of the word "adopted".
Thank you again.
