Ty'n llan, Llangelynin near Conwy
« on: Monday 20 July 15 14:50 BST (UK) »
My GGrandfather Robert Evans was baptised at Llangelynin (old) Church in 1838. In the register the family abode is Ty'n llan which I assume from the name must have been somewhere in close proximity to this remote church. In the 1841 census the family had moved to Tyn Frith (Ty'n-y-ffridd) and there is no Ty'n llan listed.
I understand that there was an inn on the SE corner of the church yard which was demolished in the 19th C. Was this Ty'n llan and has anyone got further information concerning the inn.

Hello Cennydd.
No it isn't the church near Towyn. This church is high on the west side of the Conwy Valley just above Henryd and strangely not shown on the current OS maps. The parish of Llangelynin or Llangelynnin was split between Caerhun and Gyffin later in the 19th century.

Thank you for checking.

This article does say the foundations of an inn were discovered by the church, but no more details. You would certainly work up a thirst getting there. The church does appear on OS maps up to 1993 at www.old-maps.co.uk,postcode LL32 8LJ(the same postcode for Cae Defaidty Farm.next to Tyn Ffrith in the 1841 census).

Could Ty'n Llan have been further away-there is a Maes y Llan in Gyffin?

Roger

Thanks Roger for your input.
In all the years of visiting North Wales I had never heard of this church but from the link you provided it almost appears a mystical place. There is a possibility that it was Maes y Llan although I doubt it since Gyffin had its own church and my GGrandfather and his brothers were all baptised in St Celynin's Church. The family moved from Caerhun to Ty'n Llan around 1834/5 Wikipedia states that in 1840 the church was replaced by a new church further down the valley due to depopulation. On the 1887 map underneath the name "St Celynin's Church" there is a bracketed reference to a Rectory.  I am now wondering if Ty'n Llan is a the old rectory house that was no longer used in the 1830's by the church, certainly a number of baptisms including my GGrandfather's were carried out by the Dwygyfylchi Curate.

I remember seeing the rectory on the map, from memory this was attached to the new church.I have an even vaguer memory that I found it as "Rectory" on a census.Ty'n Llan, and variants,is not an uncommon name, and coincidentally,I had just begun to look for one in the Dwygyfylchi area.I'll carry on looking.

As Ty'n Llan translates as Glebe House, there is every chance it could be the name of a rectory.
There is a Ty'n Llan next to St Gwynan's church in Dwygyfylchi, though this church wasn't built until the 1880s
