I don't know who these gents are but would be interested in dates and what religion they are from the clothes.

The gent on his own was photographed in Folkestone, however on the back is the name W.E., and J Goss Stationers of  Kettering Northants.  The signature looks like K or H Lindsay.  Maybe that is not his photo.  Did he purchase it in the stationers and send it to someone - who knows.

I am just curious about dates and denomination.

Carol, thanks. I have been searching for H Lindsay in Folkstone. The funny thing is hubby from Chesterfield, Derbyshire has a connection with Lindsay name. Am trying to do his tree but it's a nightmare. As his father is not the son of his father. So hubbies and my surname should be Lindsay but I can't find him.

Sorry rambling.

Could my photo be him?  Is it that old?

The other 2 guys when I saw them I though father and son or maybe brothers. Can you see a likeness.

Am getting quite hooked on this new hobby. My album family search is coming on slowly, took me all afternoon to identify 3 beach pics but I did it all on my own, with a little help from Google.

I would judge him to be in his late 60s early 70s so maybe 1890s.
looking at the census returns he had Daughters...maybe if you look further back to his brothers there may be clues as to where this branch of Lindsays originates.

Hi Jane,

The man in the bottom picture was Canon Henry Lindsay, Rector of Kettering in Northamptonshire from 1853 to 1892, who oversaw major restoration work to the town's parish church from 1890 to 1892. Walter and John Goss were brothers who ran a printing and publishing business in Kettering, specialising in stationery and bookbinding. The print works operated from 1880 to 1917, when the brothers died within six months of each other. Hope this is of interest.

Tony

Hi Tony,

Thank you it is indeed useful and a surprise to get a reply after so long.  My next task will be to see if I can find any relatives who might like the picture especially as it is signed.

Looking at the first picture again. Photographer Arthur Winter of Lune St. Preston. From Google I learned he was at this address from 1889. Not much else found but was wondering what is the significance , if any, of Photographer Royal. I doubt i can identity these two men with nothing written on the photo.
