Kirkpatrick Fleming Baptism 1811 Helen Edgar
« on: Tuesday 21 July 15 12:05 BST (UK) »
I actually have a photo copy of an entry in a register but the last word is a puzzle as it looks like Berekshousehead. The rest reads Helen Lawful daughter of James Edgar & Helen Campbell.

The date is 20 Sep 1811 a ringed 35 at the top of the page.

The entry below is odd as it just says June without a day. William natural son of Lancelot Scott & Ann Dalrymple. Blacksawe. Carlaverock.

Lawful v Natural ......married  /unmarried or what?    Were kids just dumped in those days?

It looks to me like Birkshawhead. This was a farmstead, described in the OS Name Books (1848-58) as being a farmhouse with steading, garden and farmland attached, and located about 36 chains (just under 800 yards) west of Cove. Cove still exists on the south-west side of the railway near Kirkpatrick-Fleming but I see no sign at present of Birkshawhead.

Regards
Ian

Thanks Miriam. Good examples of the king of records.
Thanks Ian. I never was a decipherer. By 1841 James Edgar was living at Brown Knowe.
No trace of James after. He was a master tailor and Robert Edgar (son) also a tailor was there by 1851.
1861/71 Irvingtown. 1881 Blackyett Rd. Moorend.
This property is the other end of Kirkpatrick Fleming across the main road & is swallowed up by a large dairy farm.

On 1851 census Mary Edgar (Robert's wife) is probably with relatives after giving birth to Mary. Can I find them? Can I heck. ???

At the 1841 census, a Mary Keightley (b.1813) was living with Jean Johnston (age 64) and Jane Keightley (age 10) at Williamsfield, Kirkpatrick-Fleming. And Robert Edgar and Mary Keightley married at Halfmorton on 31 May 1844, according to Ancestry. Did Mary go to Williamsfield (her mother's place, perhaps?) to give birth?

I think Mary Keightley's daughter, Mary Ann, died at Moorend, Kirkpatrick Fleming.    On Scotlands People, it gives the date of death as 16 Dec 1915.    She was aged 65, (which would make her born about 1850, which would be about right), and it says she was single.    It lists her parents as Robert Edgar, tailor, and Mary Caitley.    Witness: Robert Edgar, son.

Two things to notice there...   Keightley is spelt: Caitley.    And "Robert Edgar, son" - so was she married or not?    It says Mary Ann Edgar was a "Housekeeper, single."
