It appears that Mary Ann Edgar (born 1850) did have a child Robert.     Robert Edgar, Illigitimate, born 22 Jan 1873 at Irvington, Kirkpatrick Fleming.   Mother: Mary Ann Edgar, Domestic Servant.   Witness: Robert Edgar, grandfather.

OK Mary Ann Edgar calls herself Mary Ann Moor when witnessing the death of her father Robert Edgar in 1888 & Mary Ann Moore on 1891 census

Mary's Mother was b Jane Johnson & married George Keightley (Caitley)    Still in shock.....Would she revert to maiden name or Jane Johnson is Jane Keightley's mother??????

The 1881 census for 7 Blackyett Rd, Moorend has Robert Edgar (67yo), tailor master, as  head of household and Robert Nichol (8yo), his grandson. Where did the 'Nichol' name appear from? Confusingly, it also looks as if Mary is Robert's housekeeper and living next door but she is calling herself Mary Graham.

The little boy is the game keeper's son not related. Robert's wife died in 1880. I think Robert's daughter would be at the previous property in Irvingtown.....not looked yet :-*

    landj,
Was that census for 1881 on Scotlands People?     On Ancestry's 1881 census for Blackyett Road, they have Mary Graham [Mary Edgar]  like that.     I am wondering if it is like that on Scotlands People.

I was thinking this Robert could be the illigitimate son I mentioned before.   The father isn't named.   Robert was born 1873.     Maybe the father was Nichol.     Mother Mary Edgar.

Doddsie,

Yes, it is like that in the 1881 census on SP.

It's confusing though, mainly because it looks at first sight as if there are two households - Robert and so-called grandson at no.7 and Mary Graham etc at no.8. An unnamed head of household at no.8 is written in the schedule on the line immediately below Robert's household but then is marked as "absent". The line is then crossed out entirely and the four people at no.8, all with the surname "Graham", are listed as daughters with no indication as to whose daughters they are.
