Alexander Paterson b Hamilton about 1834
« on: Tuesday 21 July 15 22:39 BST (UK) »
I've hit something of a brick wall whilst trying to trace ancestors and descendants of this gentleman who appears in the 1891 census as follows. Name:   Alexander Paterson
Age:   57
Estimated birth year:   abt 1834
Relationship:   Head
Spouse's name :   Sarah Paterson
Gender:   Male
Where born:   Hamilton, Lanarkshire
Registration Number:   639
Registration district:   Dalziel
Civil Parish:   Dalziel
Town:   Motherwell
County:   Lanarkshire
Address:   Paterson's Land Dalziel St
Occupation:   Hairdresser
ED:   3
Household schedule number:   190
LINE:   12
Roll:   CSSCT1891_235
Household Members:
Name   Age
Alexander Paterson   57
Sarah Paterson   57
Robert Paterson   32
Daniel Liddel   22
David R Lockhart   27
The 1881 census and previous list him as a miner so hairdresser is a bit of a change of career! His nephew Daniel Liddel also appears in the 1881 census.
If anyone can help I would be most grateful

When and where did he die?

That's one of the bits of information I'm having difficulty finding. Last known residence in Daniel in 1891 census

Alexander Paterson 65 died 25 or 26 (crossings out on death certificate) November 1898 Dalziel and living at Dalziel Street (where he lived in 1891), Motherwell - he'd changed jobs again as then a 'Joiners Labourer'.   Shown as married to Sarah Dykes (they married 23/6/1854 Hamilton).  His parents are given as John Paterson, Handloom Weaver and Janet, nee Gilchrist (they married 9/8/1829 Hamilton).

Informant was son John Paterson.

I found him with his family on 1841 census in Patrick Street, Hamilton:

John Paterson  30    Hand Loom Weaver
Janet Paterson 25     Lace Tambourer
Barbara Paterson 9
Alexr. Paterson 7
Janet Paterson 2

1851 - 20 John Street, Hamilton

John Patterson  45       Hand Loom Weaver    born Hamilton
Jean Patterson  32                                            "
Alexander 17               Hand Loom Weaver         "
John Patterson 5
Jean Patterson 4
James Patterson 3
George Patterson 5mos

By 1861 looks as infant son George had died as 2 new children are another George 7 and Thomas 4.

1st wife Janet appears to have died between 1841 and 1845 as John remarried to a Jean Stewart 24/8/1845 Hamilton.

You'll find that Jean's can become Jane's (and vice versa) in Scottish records (my own grandmother being one such person).

John lived to a good age and died aged 88  of General Debility 6 days on 22/8/1890 - shown as married to (1) Janet Gilchrist and (2) Jane Stewart - his parents are given as Alexander Paterson, Handloom Weaver and Ellen, nee Hill (both deceased).

I cannot find any baptisms on familysearch or SP for Alexander or his 2 sisters.

I note that Alexander and Sarah had a son John bc.1854 then a Margaret in 1856 (not around in 1861 so guessing she died) and a Robert in 1858 all in Hamilton.

Hope this helps to get you working back.

Annette

(I see on familysearch that Daniel Liddel was born 1868 Polmont, Stirling to James Liddel and Barbara Paterson - clearly his mother was Alexander's eldest sister).
Scopes (One-Name Study - Worldwide)
Suffolk - Grist, Knights, Bullenthorpe, Watcham
Scotland - Spence, Horne, Cowan, Moffat
London -  Monk

I might just add that I have all of the information that Annette7 has just posted (at what expense I have no idea) and much more, plus a few more photographs and a copy of Alex & Sarah's Proclamation of Banns.

I have also re-checked my copy of Alexander's death certificate, he died on the 25th.
