Orphanages Dublin 1936-1941
« on: Wednesday 22 July 15 02:49 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My Dad and his brother were in an orphanage 1936-1941 in Blackrock Dublin, but I have never been able to find any records or exactly what it was called and where it was.  His sister went to a separate orphanage, so I assume my Dad was in an all boys one.  Does anyone know about the orphanages of that time, or where I can find out, I'm sure there must be records somewhere!

Thanks,
Sue.

As well as St Patrick's (at the top of Temple Hill), there was an orphanage for little boys at the bottom of the Hill, run by the French Sisters of Charity, I think (the ones with the huge butterfly bonnets!).

In summer in the 1950s we used to see these boys playing on the beach at Seapoint nearly every day with a couple of nuns in charge .. I'd say that they were about 3 - 6 years of age.

My guess is that a lot of them may have been in short or medium-term care, not available for adoption.

Thanks for all these suggestions.  Yes the orphanage was a 4 year stint for my Dad after his Mum had died and his Dad couldn't work and look after the kids.  He took them out when he remarried in 1941.  So these orphanages I assume were around in that time frame, 1936-41?  Does anyone know who I could contact to find out about them?

for St Theresa's I'd start with St Catherine's in Blackrock.
St Theresa's is still there, but not an orphanage.
