Pope family of Ticehurst, Sussex
« on: Wednesday 22 July 15 04:48 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I am new to this forum and searching my great grandmothers tree.  Frances Pope Born 1849, Ticehurst, Sussex, England.  Her Father is William Pope Born 1806 married to Mary Siggs, born 1812.
Frances came to Australia at age 13yrs, shipping records state that both parents had died and she was an orphan.  Frances Married William White 1868 in New Castle, New South Wales, Australia.
Then went to live in New Zealand.  Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Welcome to Rootschat.
William Pope married Mary Siggs at Etchingham on 12 May 1832.    He is of that parish and she is of Burwash.  That just means at the time of the wedding of course.
Possible baptism for Mary-
Etchingham St Mary of the Assumption & St Nicholas 1726 - 1845
Mary    SIGGS    Baptism Date     17-May   1812   Parents Richard & Anne SIGGS

There is a possible marriage for Richard Siggs to Ann Shorter at Etchingham 14 April 1806.
I can't see a baptism for William Pope at the moment.   How do you know his birth date?
Edit - I have now found him in 1851.    It looks as if he is a widower though it is is difficult to read as there are two slash marks through it.
HO107 1639  F 160 page 3.   "Francis" is age 5 and she has brothers Henry 12 and Alexander 8.   All born in Ticehurst.
In 1841 they have other children.  John 6, Mary Ann 4, Henry 2 and Louisa age 10 months.

You probably have all this but it helps others to trace them if we can get as much information on the post as possible.

Interesting to see the other birth regs.    Did you get the parents' names from a death certificate in Australia?
If it is the right family then Louisa died age 4 of Stonegate High Street Ticehurst.   Her baptism in 1840 shows William as a labourer so that fits with the census.

Frances Augusta died age 3 weeks.   The one in 1850 shows parents as Henry and Rebecca at her baptism.

I wish the UK death certs were as good!   They have scant information in those days.

Mary Pope age 36 is buried at Ticehurst 6 Dec 1848.  Address is High Street, Ticehurst.
There is a possible burial for William age 46 at Stonegate St Peter on 4 Sep 1853.
