emigration from England to Germany in 1860s
« on: Wednesday 22 July 15 11:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for the passenger lists from people living in Suffolk in the early 1860s. They moved to Magdeburg Germany before 1865/6. It was a business called Garratt's of Leiston and a lot of their workers moved. Some of the families included a Ralph (surname) and Furrongton/Farrington/Ferrington. Would anybody be able to help in finding any extra info on their journey please?

Unfortunately there aren't passenger lists available for people travelling to England from the Continent.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi

The people I'm searching are travelling from England to Germany, not to England.

Ok, thanks for the info. Is there any documents that could help me with anything regarding this?

I'm not sure if there might be incoming records on the German side, I know a lot of records have been destroyed.

This list of records for Magdeburg scheduled to become available at familysearch may be of interest:
https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Germany,_Prussia,_Saxony,_Magdeburg,_Miscellaneous_Records_%28FamilySearch_Historical_Records%29

It contains some registers of local immigrants/foreigners. This may help you narrow down when they arrived, even if you can't get a ship name.  Unfortunately FS doesn't seem to say when they expect those records to become available, just "scheduled".

Thanks for that. I thought I'd wrote that on another forum a few years ago. I've not done any ancestry stuff for over a year so thought I'd ask here as I'm looking into going to Germany next year.

Hi Benny Ralph,

Another possibility to find out more is to post a query in the german forum http://forum.genealogy.net (*)

This is very similar to RootsChat (free, just register with a valid e-mail address) and the members there are also very helpful.

I am a moderator there and there are several RootsChatters who are also members (and vice versa :) )  Many of the members there can read and write english, and the mods (i.e. me) will translate if necessary.

So post a summary of all you know so far in the Sachsen-Anhalt sub-forum
http://forum.genealogy.net/index.php?page=Board&boardID=146

Please be aware that there is not as much information online in Germany as there is here.  The help offered will be more along the lines of pointing you to relevant addresses to write to, or which archives might hold details you are seeking.

And don't forget to mention your impending visit, as they will probably guide you to places to visit, etc

Good luck,
Bob
