Remember Cumberland is the old name for Cumbria

As she is English best to try the IGI or Ancestry

the Mary (steel) Thomson appears in the 1841 & 1851 census but not the 1861 for Castleton

As she was down as a pauper - possible she buried in either Castleton Scotland or Stapleton Cumberland (Cumbria), England

you may never know, but her g/daug minnie elliot may be a clue as both her and thomas were born in castleton

will check the MI

but for proving she the right Mary Steel you will have to do a lot more dig especially since she was born in England

no trace of a Steel/Thomson in Castleton MI - but that could mean no stone

thanks

I had a feeling there would be no stone, since Mary and Thomas were considerably poor, the census details them as paupers, which explains the lack of a stone, which would have been expensive in those days.

However, there must be some kind of record of her death and burial. I don't think she returned to Stapleton, I checked the burials

I have done some more digging and I think the pre 1855 burial records do not exist.

I will double check, but from the looks of it, if Mary died between 1851 to 1854, then we will not be be able to find out when  :'(
