Placename help
« on: Wednesday 22 July 15 22:18 BST (UK) »
I have a hand written record of the 1860s (and a copy in a second hand) that clearly refers to the place 'Renmuir', Brechin. The only place I can find with a similar name is Menmuir. Can anyone who knows this area tell me whether there is such a place as 'Renmuir'? I suspect the original was a mistake and the copy was faithful to the original!

Many thanks

Paul

I have researched extensively in the Angus records and have never come across Renmuir.

Thank you Isobel :D

I've just come across a related record at Alyth which looks to be about 15 miles from Menmuir so I'm guessing this is the place referred to.

Be glad you haven't been in Alyth recently -

I don't remember coming across Renmuir in Angus or anywhere else for that matter.

However I am wary of equating Renmuir with Menmuir. They are actually about 25 miles apart, which is a day's journey in 1860s terms. I wonder if it might be Kirriemuir, which is between Alyth and Menmuir? If it was written as 'Kerimuir' it could maybe look like Renmuir?

Can you expand a bit on the information in your document? What is the context in which 'Renmuir' is mentioned? Are there are people associated with 'Renmuir'? How clear is the handwriting? Could you scan that part of the document and post it here so we can take a look at it?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Renmuir was beside Farnell, Fithie, is just South of Farnell :-

Very good, Malky.

Still a long way from Alyth - probably even further than Menmuir.
