Hawker of HARDWARE
« on: Thursday 23 July 15 09:42 BST (UK) »
My Gt Grandfather came to England 1847/8. On the cencus's up to his death in 1874 his occupation is listed as " Hawker of Hardware". I take this to mean he was a tinker. Would anyone with a knowledge of Irish history or can suggest some reading material where I can understand a bit of my history, did he walk with his wife and three children, (my grandfather would be a babe in arms), would he have a horse and cart, would there be provision for that to be taken on the ship to England to continue his occupation. If I take it that he was illiterate can I be sure that my name is Dugan or was it a name given to him by some dignatory. There are so many questions still to be answered even though I have been trying to trace my ancestry for the best part of ten years. I hope someone may be able to cast a little bit of light. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

better off to stick to one as replies get posted to one and some to other.

Hi,
!847/48 was the height of the great Irish famine when roughly 2 million people died and two million emigrated. Many went to England or Scotland and took what jobs they could find.

Is there a reason you've posted on the MAYO board as well?

My ancestors come from Mayo, one from  Castlebar, one in Kilmovee, one in Balagharadeen, and my grandfather Mayo. I came on Roots-chat a few years ago trying to find info., about my gt grandfather Michael Dugan and gt grandmother Catherine Regan without much success. I have since found out from an aged cousin that a story handed down her side of the family was that Michael and Catherine had run away together as she came from a better family. How true? who knows. The closest I found to their respective birth dates 1814 Catherine and 1819 Michael was from Co Wicklow. I really dont expect to find out much more but would like to understand more about them.

It really is best to stick to one topic on the correct board.

Michael Dugan-Catherine Regan (Ireland, 2011)

Dugan, Michael and Catherine (Wicklow, 2014)

Which board should I use for my questions?
