John Andrew (Angaston/Penrice area, S. Australia)
« on: Thursday 23 July 15 11:26 BST (UK) »
Hello all
I'm doing a bit of digging for my second cousin's husband who has hit a brickwall with his Andrew ancestors and I'm hoping someone may be able to provide some crucial info to break it down. The details we know are as follows:
John Andrew married Ann Simons in Redruth District, Cornwall, 1848 and immigrated to Australia fairly soon after, although we have no specifics of when. It appears, from articles I have found on Trove, that he was a blacksmith at Penrice, near Angaston, South Australia, around 1855, and that he may possibly be the John Andrew (and wife) who arrived in Australia on the barque, the "David Malcolm," in April 1849.

We have a smattering of information on their offspring, mostly to do with their second son Walter George Andrew, but would be especially grateful for any details about John and his wife, who are pretty much a mystery at present.

Interesting little obit ( under J Andrew)

Says he came to South Australia in 1848 ( though I agree there is a reference on SA Historical Shipping that he came on the David Malcolm in 1849. The 1848 date may have been his recollection or a family tale) and apart from time on the Victorian diggings lived most of his life in SA. His trip back from Melbourne took 3 weeks and they were down to 1 biscuit a day rations when found

Hi,
The Cyclopedia of South Australia has a very brief mention of a John Andrew, who came to the State on the 'David Malcolm', settled in Angaston and had 6 sons and 1 daughter.

You can possibly rule the David Malcolm couple out.
BISA says that John Andrew was a preacher!! Lived in Angaston, wife Ann, d 1898.
There is a separate entry though for John Andrew and Ann Simons. They were in SA by 1850, lived at Adelaide and Penrice. No occ or dod. Lists three children, William John, Walter George and Michael Prideaux.
The two couples could of course be one and the same. Just to add to the confusion.

Would make sense of the obits which keep repeating the 1848 arrival rather than an 1849 arrival
