James Davidson
« on: Thursday 23 July 15 12:59 BST (UK) »
Looking for any documentation for James Davidson, born c. 1821.  He appears on the 1841 census with William Davidson and his wife, Margaret (Ker) at 45 William Street Edinburgh.  I believe he MAY be William's younger brother, and his occupation MAY be a coachman, the same as his brother.  I can find nothing to prove his relationship, his birthdate, what happened to him after the 1841 census etc.   Any help will be appreciated.

Hi ,

The freeCEN 1841 Census transcription shows as two seperate households for William and James and gives their occupation as chairmen.
In 1851 William age 45 chairman(sedom) birthplace Loggans Inverness'shire.

Quote
Two people known as 'Chairmen' were needed to carry each chair. Many of the Chairmen came from the Highlands of Scotland. They had to be strong, fit and healthy as they were often standing outside in all weathers.

Thank you for the info.  I did know about William, my 2x great-grandfather, but wondered about James (supposing he is a brother), as I had never come across his name as a child of Alexander and Jean Davidson.  He just appeared in the 1841 census and I'm struggling to find any more definitive records on him.  The article on the chair is very interesting, by the way.
