News paper archives
« on: Friday 24 July 15 13:33 BST (UK) »
hi,I have recently applied for my fathers army service records but was unsuccessful due to not having his service number.i don't have a lot to go on re information on where he served,or even what regiment he was in.i (think) he might have been in the same regiment as his brother which was the argyll and Sutherland highlanders.dads brother was killed in India in 1942 and I was wondering if it would have been mentioned in any of the local glasgow newspapers to see if it maybe mentioned that he also had a brother in the same regiment.i know it's a bit of a long shot, but if I could find out what unit dad was in it might narrow down the search for his service number.

        Regards,johnie.

Johnie, maybe your father's records are missing/lost over time  :-\

Is this John, his brother? www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2601317/DOCHERTY,%20JOHN

Death date there for John of 13 May 1942. To look for a mention in the Glasgow Herald for example, you would have to look through individual issues of the paper from that date. You can't search by key word unfortunately.

Glasgow Herald link here . http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC - simply add year for search to see what issues may be available (insert a year in 'Date' box).

Thanks Monica and sancti, that is indeed dad's brother John's entry on the cwgc site,I rang the army personnel centre in brown street yesterday, the girl there told me there was no match to my dad's name with the dob I supplied(which I know is correct) I can only guess that he was too young to enlist and gave a false. Dob,re the herald archives,I had to put my laptop in to be repaired this afternoon, and I can't make out the herald images on my phone,so hopefully I'll have the laptop back midweek and can have a good look then.i'll ring brown street again on Monday and ask can they narrow their search to maybe the same date, but a year or two before dad's birth year.
       Thanks again,johnie.

Good plan, Johnie.

Gosh, do not try to look at the Glasgow Herald images on your phone....your eyes will not thank you for it  ;) Wait for your laptop to come home for sure  ;D

What was your dad's year of birth?

Did he have a middle name?
