Hi all,i re applied for my dad's records giving his dob as 16/11/1919 with the assumption he had given a false dob as he was under age(his true dob is 16/11/21).i received records back but unfortunately these were for a j.docherty from renfrewshire.i rang brown street again and spoke to a very helpful lady who said she would bring up all references on the data base that matched with j.docherty with a birthday in nov 1921,i gave her dad's address and who would likely be his next of kin to cross reference with,and BINGO she found the elusive files.dad's dob was for some reason listed as 18/11/21.
 he enlisted in 1941,he served in the royal artillery in various places in the uk until 1944,when he was posted to n/w europe.he was demobbed in 1946. there are numerous abbreviations and acronyms on the records,which i am trying( with help) to decypheri'll update as i get any new info re dad's service.  regards,johnie.

Johnie, hurray for you  You found his birth. Sometimes we over complicate things in our head, more than we need to really. How great was this lady to find the correct entry wasn't she. A couple of days off...what can we say really 

Hope you get all the help you need to decipher the records you have.

thanks monica,yes that lady was using her brains,when she could have told me there was no match for dad's dob and ended the search,so a big three cheers for her
