Can I just put in a plea that a link or a photo is added to a suggestion, so that it can be agreed or eliminated quickly without us having to spend time looking for it ourselves?

That is a good idea groom. It would be nice if a specific suggestion of a place is accompanied by a link. It also might eliminate a few red herrings, and we would also know which specific building was being referred to (Carnegie Library is a good example).  :)

There may be some leeway if a suggestion is made, the person is certain they are right, but they need to go off to search for a picture taken from the same viewpoint to back up their claim.

I can't think of a public building in my home city with a wall round it and a gateway, they are all open to the road. Is the building in the photo unusual in this respect?

I see it as a Church and it looks similar ( but not) to All Saints Bristol

It reminds me of Leamington Spa town hall (I was pipped at the post on that one). The top is very similar, but this one is taller and has a clock, and the building it's attached to seems to be a lot smaller.

Leamington's is here:

So, a town hall for a smaller town, but one with pretensions to greatness?

Arthur

Sorry, I must have been half asleep when I wrote that. It's Leamington's tower that is larger, with a clock. This one, and the building, is smaller. I still think it's a town hall, and it might be worth looking into architects etc because of the similar shape to the dome thingy (cupola?).

Sorry again for the confusion.

Spidermonkey's Guild Hall looks similar too, so maybe another search term? Still you would expect all these civic buildings to be in the centre of town with not so much greenery (lovely though it is)

dgibbins I have been looking for churches too. The only thing putting me off this idea is all those people who look to be in their Sunday best are neither coming to or from this building.  ::)
