Thanks - this is getting interesting. I realised that daughter Agnes was born in France but have never done a search of French records - so thanks for finding them.

I've made a leap of intuition re Carolines maiden name. In 1881 Henry's sister-in-law Louisa is staying with them. Carolines sister? Checking her marriage in India in 1856 to Walter D'Oyly Kerrich (and I feel this is the right track because the Kolesars one generation in the future call one of their sons Paul D'Oyly Kolesar) her maiden name is Cleanland - surely Clelland?? However I haven't been able to find a Caroline Clelland/Cleanland being born in Italy. If really necessary I can order Frances' birth cert but this detective work is more interesting!!

re Henry's disability - how would it have been dealt with in Victorian times.  Obviously the family had money - would he have been sent away to be nursed? - or to a Convent type of place? -would he have lived with a retainer companion?

It's also got me thinking about how he communicated. Anyone know when did sign language come into use?

off to look through all your notes. Thanks  Rose H

Henry Tidmarsh £884 late of Brieuc Cotes du Nord Brittany in France a gentleman  widower died 24.10.1881 at St B was granted to Frances Mary Tidmarsh of Kemberton the daughter and next of kin.

Is this Henry Tidmarsh the senior one who married Frances Bick in 1828? My Henry  (b 1830) wouldn't make his 2 year old daughter next of kin surely?

If Henry (senior) 'retired' in 1837 to live in France is it likely he took his son Henry with him - which is why there isn't a record of him in England until 1881?

It is a distinct possibility and they do appear to have relations who travel all over the world.

Ask on the Europe board for pointers to French records/censuses?
