Catholic Baptisms c1860s Kilwinning/Kilmarnock
« on: Saturday 25 July 15 16:02 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone knew where I could access catholic baptism registers for Kilwinning and Kilmarnock in Ayrshire for around the 1860s - I have the statutory births and I've searched Scotlands People's Catholic records but can't find the baptisms.  It's for a Patrick Lennan born 3 May 1860 at 46 Byrchill Row, Kilwinning to a Michael Lennan and Elizabeth Leonard and a Margaret Leonard Priestly born 28 May 1866 in Kilmarnock to John Priestly and Margaret Leonard.

Thanks for any pointers in the right direction.

 Hi Famtreebuilder

I think the address might be Byrehill as this is an area in Kilwinning. Good luck with your search.

Thanks Rustypup - I had another look at the certificate and I'm sure you're right  :)

The search is very long-standing; Patrick's parents came from Ireland and I don't know where.  I was just thinking perhaps the names of witnesses from his baptism could help with other family members although I suspect one would be his aunt who registered his birth but it would be great to see a baptismal record anyway.

Hello Famtreebuilder,

On Scotlandspeople Catholic Births, there is a Patrick Lenon, born 3/May1860. at St. Mary's, Catholic Church, Saltcoats, Ayrshire, to parents Michael Lenon, and El* Leonard.

Regards,
Jonn.

ps intended to say two entries for that date one will be the birth and most likely the other the Baptism.

Oh thank you Jonn - not sure how I missed that as I searched with wildcards but never mind.  It's just great that there is one for him and it's accessible.  Thank you!

I've found it - it's indexed twice or there are two identical records.

Hello Famtreebuilder,

Most Catholic Births,  come up as two results. Usually Birth and Baptism.

Regarding the other birth there is one or should i say two for a Margaret Pr*y, 1866. Kilmarnock, St Josephs Roman Catholic Church, parents John Pr*y, and Margaret L*n*d.

Because a birth comes up with one spelling on Scotlandspeople Statuary Records, it does not mean that that spelling will be the same on the Catholic Church Records.

Regards,
Jonn.

Thanks Jonn - of course that makes sense.  I've got it now.  Sadly it didn't give me any new clues but it's nice to have it and at least know when he was baptised.

That's the right one for Margaret too; I just didn't search well enough the first time round I guess!

Hello famtreebuilder

No disrespect as i have lots of Irish, Catholic Ancestors, but you have to be wary with the spelling variations to their names as i have found myself.

Godd luck with your research.

Jonn.
