Union Row, Hastings

Does anyone know where Union Row was in Hastings and am I right in thinking that it was demolished to make way for the extension of Bourne Street in the 1950s?

Hello artifis

If you put into google  where was Union Row  Hastings, plenty of info comes up,even a photo.
It is a passage leading from the top end of All Saints Street to the Bourne,so could possible still be there.
When the holiday season is over will take a look for you .Hastings Old Town is very popular.

kind regards
omega :)

Hi Omega,

I did that and saw the photo but couldn't find anything saying where it was.  I've gone up and down All Saint's Street via Google Streetview and can't find the passageway so it's either been renamed or demolished but if you could look for me I'd very much appreciate it.

Hi keyboard86,

In 1901 my ancestor Whitfield Sellings was living at no. 8 Union Row hence my interest.

Hi again, 1066 Genealogy suggest as part of the Old Town Clearance that Numbers 2 to 15 Union Row formed part of the Clearance or were Compulsory Purchased as part of the Bourne Clearance

Hi Keyboard I'd just found that too and was writing as you posted.   :D

Looking at the 1901 census I've got a rough idea where it was and I see that Old-Maps have 1:500 scale maps of Hastings so I'll have a look and maybe get a map of the area I suspect it's in though the map I've got at that scale of the Courthouse Street area - my ancestors ran the Alma Tavern and King's Head pubs in that area in the 1800s - doesn't name some of the passageways.

I think I'll also email the Old Hastings Preservation Society in case they have maps that show it.

The same ancestor was living in Bourne Passage in the 1871 census and that was another small 'road' demolished in the Hasting's clearances.

The Old-Maps site seems to have crashed at the moment so will try again tomorrow.

Thanks for your help.

You can see Union Row on the 1:500 plan at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/582687/109799/13/100592 you may have to zoom out.
