1851 Census - Blaen y Coed / Conwil Elvet
« on: Sunday 10 July 05 21:06 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace back a Thomas family in Wales! I'm looking for Leah Thomas born Blaen y Coed or Conwil Elvet, Carmarthenshire around 1847. She is the daughter of Hannah Thomas (born circa 1811) and/or Benjamin Thomas (born circa 1814). Any chance of finding this family in 1851 please? There were, as I recall, rather a lot of Benjamin and Hannah Thomases, but I'm hoping Leah is a more helpful name. The other village that seems to figure prominently is Cilrhedyn, so they could be there.

Any help in this impossible mission most gratefully received.

Lyndon

Have you found her on later censuses?

Do you have her baptism - perhaps she used a middle name?

Think this is her in 1851 at Pontcych,Cilrhedyn,Kenarth.Anna Thomas/Widow/41/Dressmaker/Kilredin,Carms/Rachel Thomas/dau/11/Kilredin,Pembs/David Thomas/son/9/Kilrhedin,Pembs/Sarah Thomas/dau/6/Conwyl Carms and Lea Thomas/dau/4/Conwyl Carms.Rachel James /Apprentice/20/Dressmakers Apprentice. Also in Carmarthenshire in Qtr April 1853 a Benjamin Thomas married a Hannah Thomas. So this looks likely as there is not another Leah b-1847 Conwyl that I can find.Best Wishes Welsh Lady

Ah, fantastic. Thank you Welsh Lady. Yep, that sure looks like the one. That's brill.

I recently came across this too.

Cambrian B10 MARRIAGES, MARRIAGE  08 December 1838
KILREHDYN CHURCH,PEMBROKE:MR TIMOTHY THOMAS (82) TO MISS ANNA EVANS (28) - BOTH OF KILRHEDYN.

If that age is right for Timothy Thomas, it certainly explains why she was widow in 1851, and also raises some very interesting questions.

That's great. So the age was right! My 2 x g Grandmother  (Anna) was obviously quite a character. The best bit of colour in the family tree for a long time. I went all through the 1841 census for the area and must have missed them.

Bless you! I'm now much closer to nailing this family legend!

Best wishes. Lyndon
