Marriage of Reverend Edgar Selby to Faith Hunter 1910, Ceylon.
« on: Sunday 26 July 15 18:09 BST (UK) »
According to this article http://www.methodistheritage.org.uk/missionary-history-graham-wesley-deaconess-ceylon-2004.pdf
Reverend Edgar Thomas Selby born 1881 in Buxton, Derbyshire married Faith Hunter, a deaconess in the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society about 1910 in Batticaloa, Ceylon. Any suggestions where I could find the date of this marriage? It’s believed that Faith died in Ceylon before 1932, when the Reverend Selby returned to Britain, any suggestions of where I could find her date of death and burial?

The Western Daily Press of 28 August 1933 has an article reporting that the Rev Edgar Thomas Selby (late of Ceylon) would be the next minister of Clevedon Methodist Church and superintendent of the Clevedon circuit, and that the Rev and Mrs Selby would be taking up residence at the Manse next Thursday.

I missed that entry in the Western Press about Rev Edgar Thomas & his wife going to Clevedon-they stayed there for 8 years and then went onto Smethwick. He ended up after the war in Bristol as warden of the "New Room".

Thanks for the probate record too.

So it looks like Faith was her surname, not her forename, but no doubt she used it as a forename when a Wesleyan Deaconess in Ceylon.

No that's not right. I fear I have unintentionally misled you in the way that I have reported the entry in the Probate calendar. It should read:

SELBY Hannah Margaretta Faith otherwise Faith, of 4 Charles Street, Bristol (wife of Edgar Thomas Selby)...

No it's okay you didn't mislead me, I mislead myself if that's understandable?

Now to find their marriage in Ceylon. It looks like she had 1 forename and 2 other names, one of which was Faith, which was the name she used rather than the others. So her surname (maiden name was still Hunter.

I have fairly extensive experience in Ceylon Genealogical Research. Looking at my P&0 Motor Map of Ceylon, published in the 1920’s/1930’s   I see that Batticaloa is on the east Coast which is the least developed part of the Island. The couple were Wesleyan Methodists which adds to the problem.

I went through my usual routine for C of E settlers or professionals.

Families in British India Society   No Results
Straits Times, Singapore   No Results
Times of London  No Results
familysearch.org   No Results
ancestry.com  No Results
Find My Past   No results
My Heritage   No results
Google – there are books published on the Wesleyan Methodists in Ceylon and as we can see the couple were married in 1910, Batticaloa but no futher information seems available.

The profile of a marriage easily found is a C of E marriage in Newara Eliya or Badulla where records are available. Tea Country.

Thanks anyway for the reply. More than likely the marriage may have been reported about in one of Methodist Magazines that were current at the time. I know it's possible to obtain online copies of them, so I will try that. Yes the account about the 1910 marriage seems the one to go for. I also intend to visit John Rylands College in Manchester that houses Methodist Archives to learn more about his wife a Weslyean Deaconess.
