Athalia Arndell

Can anybody help me? I am trying to trace the birth/baptism/parents of A(r)thalia Arndell, who according to the census after she married george Smart, is down as being born in Upton St Leonards. However, after YEARS of trying, I cannot find a birth/baptism record for her. I have tried Arndell, Arndel. arundell, Arundel, Arnell and I still draw a blank. She married George Smart in November  1817 in Gloucester and appears on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses   as Athalia Smart. I am at my wits end to know what to try or what to look up.

Have done a little research pending my visit to the Archives and found the following:-
George SMART married Arthalia ARUNDELL, 20th November 1817 at St Mary, Cheltenham by Banns.
Children
Edward s/o George & Athaliah a Servant of St Mary de Lode, Barton, (Gloucester), bap 14th December 1825. Born: 30th November 1818.
Charles SMART s/o George & Athaliah, a Servant of St Mary de Lode, Barton, (Gloucester), bap 10th September 1820.
George SMART, s/o George & Athaliah, a Servant of St Mary de Lode, Barton, (Gloucester), bap 23rd March 1823.
I'll get back to you with what I find tomorrow.

Thank you. I have been to the records office several times in the past and can verify what you have said so far. I would be so delighted to find her baptism. There were other Arndells and Arundells in the area at the same time as she would have been born eg in Edgworth and in sapperton. I wonder whether she might have been known by some completely different name perhaps Ethel or something.

Looking at the Gloucestershire Marriage Index 1800 onwards there are only two ARNDELL's (as spelt) marriages listed - the one you are interested in and a Hugh ARNDELL who married Elizabeth DIXON - 6 December 1829 Gloucester St Mary's

There are baptisms at Cheltenham St Mary

as they named a daughter Selina - assume there is a family connection to Selina who died in 1838 at 55

Hi Beryl,
This one has led me a merry dance! I first checked the St Leonard, Upton St Leonard PRs on the microfiche which was hard to read and years 1791 & 1793-4 were missing. I had no luck on A******y either. I then checked the Bishops Transcripts (BTs) ref MF 620 but ONLY found the following entry which may be yours:-
July 30th, 1797 Jeremiah s/o Stephen & Hannah ARNAL bap.
I thought I'd also check the marriage entry to see if any further information could be gleaned.

George SMART, of this parish, Bachelor and Arthalia ARNDELL, of this parish, Spinster, were married in this church by Banns 20th November 1817.
George & Arthalia signed 'X' in the presence of John ROBBINS & Mary POWELL, both signed 'X'.

There is a Stephen AURUNDEL age 73 c 1767 buried at Cheltenham St Mary New Burial Ground 14 May 1840 - this could be the father of Jeremiah etc.  **

I am having the same trouble with her husband George Smart.I can't find any trace of birth or death for him and want to find his parents.Their son Edward is my 3rd great granddad.
