Penygroes Where is this house and Who Am I?
« on: Sunday 26 July 15 18:41 BST (UK) »
This photograph was taken Penygroes, date unknown; lady was Dilys Jane Jones born 1895 Bron Eryri Terrace, Llandwrog, she was my father's sister.

The chap in the photograph was her "boyfriend", a Mr. Roberts, who was a Chief Engineer for Royal Mail Lines; he was from Penygroes.  Family info has him at one time lodging in Bootle, probably because he sailed out of Liverpool. The Jones family moved to Bootle, Dilys' father being a master dairyman, the family visited the area often, staying with various family members. During the war they lived Bro Hedd, Road - me included!

I don't recognise the house in front of which this has been taken, possibly it was Mr. Roberts family home, or the home of her Evans cousins, who at one time lived near the railway station in Penygroes.

I would love to know Mr. Roberts first name, date of birth, parents AND where this house was; not asking too much am I ?? :-\

Glenys,

I've taken the liberty to 'crop' the image to get more of the picture in without the white space. I've also moved it from Caernarfonshire, and though you ad posted it in the right place really I thought the people on the "Recognition" board might enjoy this challenge.

Bricks: I notice the brickwork on the right of the picture is quite distinctive with black and white bricks.

Tie and Hat: I wonder too if the type of hat and tie he's wearing is distinctive enough for a period of fashion to help us date it? The tie seems to be chopped straight at the bottom.

Watch: I wonder what time it is on his watch? Coupled with the direction of the shadow, we could work out which direction the house is facing. It might be my imagination, but I'd say it's 12:55 on his watch, which I think would mean the house is south facing.

The arch above the doorway is very distinctive too.

I've gone up and down (virtually) some of the streets in Google Streetview for Penygroes (it's not that big a place) but nothing jumped out at me - but I missed some of the streets.

Trystan,

Thank you so much for cropping the photo - something I've as yet not mastered, also for moving the post.   Much appreciated.
Still being hopeful!!1 ;)

Which Penygroes is it?

Doh!  I'm guessing that as it has been moved from the Caernarfonshire board, it is that one.

I'll slink away now.........

Have you also tried putting a query on the occupations bit of the board, because presumably as a chief engineer, he would have his ships log etc.

I'm wondering if there would be an announcement of their marriage in the Daily Post, or the Western Mail perhaps?

Looking at the Merchant Seaman records on FindMyPast, there is a William Norman Roberts bn Penygroes in Dec 1895.  It includes his photo, which hopefully I have attached here for you to compare.
