Pelynt Baptisms - John JAGO 1805
« on: Monday 27 July 15 07:48 BST (UK) »
Hi all!

I am trying to pin down the Baptism of my 4G Grandfather, John JAGO in Pelynt.

There seems to be some confusion as to the correct baptism date, and I can find no source at all for the most common one listed in various family trees!

The Date I am interested in is 28th March 1805, in the Parish   of Pelynt.

It may be of interest to know that he is in the 1841 Census living in St Veep, so he *may* have been born there?

Hope someone can find the the documentary evidence!!

Best Wishes

Cornwall-OPC-Database reports this baptism:

10th June 1806, ay Pelynt
John Jago, son of John and Anne

The same entry appears on FindMyPast - as a transcription only, but mother's name as Ann.

Added:  there are no Jago baptisms recorded in 1805 at Pelynt.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks for the responses, I appreciate your input!

However!!

I did find 10 Jun 1806, Place: Pelynt, Father: John  & Mother: Ann (OPC Database) (Thank You, again!)

There is a recorded burial for a John JAGO aged 4 on 15 Jan 1811, in Pelynt, who is most likely the 1806 child… given that a 'John & Ann' had another John in 1815, in Pelynt, it seems likely!

(IF ONLY they’d included maiden names!!)  ::)

Now, the record I found for a baptism 28 Mar 1805, Place: Pelynt, Father: John (Blacksmith) & Mother: Ann is only appearing on http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/search/advanced/parish/baptism/full/?s_id=812&id=700930

But the site is less than helpful as to where the information has come from: 'Parish » Parish Transcript Baptisms » Full'  …sigh…

This date is quoted also by the lovely Amelia, one of the Cornwall OPCs (St Veep, I believe), but I have been unable to find any source, as yet.

I was hoping some very kind soul may have access to the actual parish registers for either Pelynt or St Veep, to have a look around this 1805 date to confirm the information for me…

Best wishes from a cold wintery Australia!

Hi Gene, I was wondering if you ever did pin down John Jago's parents? I'm researching the same man for a Tasmanian friend but am having the same difficulties ie the parents listed in most of the online trees seem to be wrong (unless I'm missing something, which I could be) as that John Jago died young.

Hi, thanks for the post!

I have not got any further with this unfortunately! Ive put these Cornish people aside for now, (hoping for more info to surface in a future date... :o ...as is often the case!

Ive been working on another twig of the same tree... a Mary BOND (1828-1925) who hails from St Dominick's parish, Ashton, near Callington, Cornwall, and her husband, Rev. John Thomas PITHOUSE (1836-1926) (not Cornish, but I forgive him as he had the sense to marry a Cornish lass!) Both died in Portland, Victoria, though 2 of their sons populated Tassie with more PITHOUSES!.

Happy to share what I have but probably not on this forum as we are drifting away from the Topic...
gene2bearATgmailDOTcom will find me...

Best wishes
