Robert RAE/REAY/REA/RAY alive in 1857 but where is he in 1851?
« on: Thursday 30 July 15 13:21 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
I've been looking on and off for this chap for what seems like years now....In 1857 Diana Rae gets married to George Nicol in St Cyrus and the witnesses are a Margaret Taylor (no idea who she is) and a Robert Rae. Diana had a brother Robert born in 1818 and I think the witness might be him - well I'm hoping it's him.
Robert's birth:

I've tried to find him in 1851 but the closest I've come is a Robert Rae, shoemaker living Aberdeenshire but he consistently states he was born in Skene. Strangely, he has a James Nicol, father-in-law, with his on the 1851 census.

Hi Rosie,

Yes that's Robert's mom - the Jollys have been done to dead on Rootschat. The link below is about Diana's first husband the dreaded captain - George Nicol was her second husband. Please, don't waste time on the Jollys they are all in a little box waiting to be written up. I'm looking for a few last folk so I know I've covered all the bases as best I can before I start scribbling.....when I was reviewing my paperwork I realised I'd not followed through on Robert Rae.

Rosie you're too quick! Looks like I can write the shoemaker off as a likely candidate - wonder if that birth took place in Skene or even Aberdeenshire?

Jen

I don't suppose William Rae could have been married twice, making Robert and Diana half-siblings? And it is possible, though very unusual, for a child to be born in one parish and baptised in another.

If I were you I'd check the shoemaker's death certificate, just in case.

Another thought - could Rae have been mistranscribed/indexed as Kae?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Forfarian,
This is Diana's brother:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYND-G6J
Their mother Margaret McBey didn't die until 1864 and was still with her husband on the 1841 census living St Cyrus - just rechecked that and see they had two young children with them a John Hood age 9 and a William Rae age 6 must follow through on them...

As Rosie mentioned there was a Robert Rae born in Skene - snip attached from OPR. I'm pretty sure he is the shoemaker as on one of the census his place of birth is transcribed as 'Letter'.

There is a Robert Rae in the navy records at FindMyPast - his dob is given as 1820 and it lists only Scotland as his place of birth - also the record only covers the years 45 to 48.

I've tried searching on Kay/Kea/Kae in 51 but I can't find anyone born St Cyrus or thereabouts.

Now wondering if the Robert Rae who signs at the marriage is maybe unrelated
Jen

Just found this!!!
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYND-R4M
I'm not sure how I ever missed that - hopefully the OPR will reveal all....
