Location of Greenhall Street
« on: Thursday 30 July 15 20:44 BST (UK) »
I have a death certificate from 1873. The poor chap has died from shock brought on by a compound fracture to his leg - tibula and fibula. It may have happened in the course of his work as a tramway cab driver in Glasgow. Anyway, he died in The Royal Infirmary but his usual residence is noted as 8 Greenhall Street which I can't find.

Does anyone have any idea where it is/was? It doesn't say Glasgow but am assuming it is in the city otherwise it would have been noted.

Thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

How legible is the name of the street?  I've been looking at the street directories of the time and there doesn't seem to be a Greenhall Street listed in Glasgow.

Also looked at a few sites which list old and new street names or lost streets, but not found anything.

Cheers folks. It's very legible and looks like Greenhall rather than Greenhill. But may have been missheard and wrongly transcribed.

John - are you talking about the Greenhill St in Rutherglen? Or is there another one in Glasgow?

Hello Sarah, yes there is only one Greenhill Street, Glasgow, just off Main Street, Rutherglen, on the 1881 census disc that i have.

Jonn.

There was a GREENHILL Street , Glasgow  listed in the 1873 Directory . It ran from St. Vincent Street to Bishop Street - there was also a GREENHAUGH Street in Govan.

Well spotted Falkryn! Think that may be the right place as the family are located at Barony, Calton area around this time.

Where did you find Greenhill Street mentioned? Post Office Directory?

Yes, it's listed in the 1873/74 Glasgow Post Office Directory but the maps show it at the "other" end of St Vincent Street quite a bit away from Calton.

If you locate Bishop Street on a modern Map and Pitt Street - Greenhil Street was an extension of Bishop Street Northwards to St Vincent Street and ran parallel to Pitt Street.

Thanks all for your suggestions. At the moment it's a toss up between Greenhill Street in Glasgow or Greenhaugh in Govan as the family has links to both.

I found an account of the accident in the Glasgow Herald. The name had been written as John Govan. He fell whilst driving the Tramway car and the front wheel broke his leg. In the article they say he was taken to a police station, treated by the surgeon there and then taken to the Royal Infirmary.

This family are proving tricky to pin down on the census and I suspect they may have come from Ireland. Now need to do more hunting.

Thanks again

Sarah
